STUDIOS, GALLERIES & PERFORMING ARTS
A journey of art and soul. Galleries, studios, exhibitions and performance combine to offer a unique art experience. View, savour, partake and share in these artistic indulgences.
Visit one of the many galleries or studios that exist in our region and you will witness a visual feast. Check out home studios and watch artisans up close and personal. Whilst most galleries and studios have listed open hours, some artists’ studios enjoy their privacy in hideaway locations but open by appointment.
Galleries of repute are located throughout the region, including Paynesville, Nicholson, Nungurner, Nowa Nowa and Metung. Sculpture, glassware, drawing, painting, jewellery, ceramics, photography, textiles or mixed media are a selection of what is on offer.
Galleries of indigenous art located in Bairnsdale at the East Gippsland Aboriginal Art Corporation and the Krowathunkooloong Keeping Place are a must see.
Community bands, dance, music and theatrical groups continue to entertain and educate, reflecting strongly on our diverse community through the performing arts medium.
East Gippsland Art Gallery
Stimulate your senses and visit the East Gippsland Art Gallery (EGAG), located in a beautiful circa 1868 heritage building in Bairnsdale. Originally the Shire Offices, the building is now home to a Public Gallery that exists to promote, stimulate and develop arts & culture in our region.
The EGAG was first established in 1992 from local council funding and Arts Victoria. It is an extremely busy public gallery showing an average of 22 exhibitions a year and its calendar is booked 12 - 18 months ahead. Exhibitions range across all art forms and media, showcasing a diverse range of artists. The gallery is available for individual or community group hire and fees and conditions are available on request.
The Gallery Shop, located in reception, showcases an exciting range of high quality items by local artists and craftspeople. Visitors are warmly welcomed at the EGAG and gallery staff and volunteers able to provide a broad range of information about the region's arts community, galleries and craft outlets.
The EGAG has become the focal point for the visual arts in East Gippsland and is part of the network of the Public Galleries Association of Victoria.
