RETAIL INDUSTRY

The retail industry is the largest single employer in East Gippsland and a dynamic and growing sector of the local economy. Indeed, retailing and its support services are a major factor in the economic stability of the region and its on-going prosperity.

East Gippsland has a wide and vibrant range of retail services. Here a profitable and expanding mix of national and international companies work side by side with owner operated retail outlets and home based businesses. Bairnsdale is the region’s major retail and commercial centre. The multitude of outlets provide an ever changing ‘retail therapy’ experience for locals and visitors – an all day event for some and a quick shop for others. Many smaller towns such as Lakes Entrance, Orbost and Mallacoota have a surprising array of shopping options as do the villages of Metung, Paynesville and Bruthen.

The spectrum of ancilliary services is vast – banking. legal, accounting, planning, engineering and a full range of trades. These provide the necessary business support to the retail, tourism, agricultural, horticultural and other sectors.

Restaurants and food outlets service the growing overnight tourist and daytrip market, providing the visitor with local produce and tastes of the region. A number of fishing tackle/bait shops serve the needs of the many visiting fishing enthusiasts selling that lure or ‘tasty morsel’ which will catch something bigger. Tourism and retailing go hand in hand in this region.
